COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Bloomington nonprofit advanced plans to build more homeless shelters as Home Sweet Home Ministries purchased land on Oakland Avenue for $250,000 from Connect Transit to develop a cabin village that will shelter up to 56 individuals. The project — which received over $1,000,000 in grants from the McLean County Board — closed on the property today.  25 News Now
  • The Humane Society of Central Illinois had its air conditioning fail Thursday morning, and donations of box fans and water kept the shelter running — now the nonprofit is seeking monetary contributions as it works to repair the unit and plans temporary homes for some animals amid rising temperatures. Staff expect the heat to be dangerous for the pets unless more support comes in soon.  25 News Now
  • Home Sweet Home Ministries launched the Build The Bridge campaign to raise $750,000 for 48 sleeping cabins and a community building for unsheltered neighbors at 104 East Oakland Avenue—approved by both the Bloomington and Normal City Councils—and is finalizing nearly $1.5 million from a McLean County grant along with a $100,000 donation from Eastview Christian Church.  Central Illinois Proud
  • Olympic champion Scott Hamilton will headline the American Red Cross Evening of Stars benefit as the keynote speaker at Illinois State University. The event will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 12 in the Brown Ballroom of the Bone Student Center — tickets cost $200 general admission and $750 for VIP access.  25 News Now

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • James E. Camden, 19, from East Peoria, was struck and killed by a passenger train before 4:15 p.m. Tuesday near Towanda Avenue—Kays Drive in northeast Normal, and toxicology tests are pending.  WGLT

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Starting July 1, Illinois drivers will see their gas tax rise to 48.3 cents per gallon — an increase set by an automatic inflation adjustment. Supporters say the extra tax will fund road repairs while critics claim it will burden consumers and push drivers to fill up in neighboring states.  Cities 92.9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The northbound lanes of Towanda Avenue between Fort Jesse Road & Shelbourne Drive will be closed starting at 4 a.m. today for repairs.  The Pantagraph
  • The McLean County Regional Planning Commission released a draft Land Use Plan that shows future growth mainly on the outskirts of Bloomington and Normal and invited residents to review and comment by July 23—community planner Anthony Baumann said the plan will update current development frameworks.  WGLT
