ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ On May 16, a dust storm formed in Central Illinois near Bloomington-Normal and swept dust toward Chicago as farmers noted that strong winds picked up dry soil residue from fields. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ New lawmakers in Central Illinois have learned that change is hard in Springfield when many bills stall and the minority party finds it tough to work with established lawmakers. Rep. Regan Deering and other freshmen focus on specific issues (like modernizing state systems) while gearing up for a possible special session on federal cuts. WGLT
- ➤ The McLean County Unit 5 board approved a new fiscal 2025 budget worth $239 million and heard from teachers who said cellphones distract students in class (they want them banned). The board increased the budget with extra tax money and higher bus costs to cover a $4 million rise in spending and updated the student handbook with new cellphone rules. The Pantagraph
- ➤ The Normal Town Council voted Monday to ban short-term rentals in R1 and R2 residential neighborhoods, which means only 17 existing businesses will continue while 49 will cease operations by 2030. City Manager Pam Reece said the five-year delay gives property owners time to recoup investments—those needing more time can appeal the duration of the ban. WGLT
