  • Director Troy Zeigler in a video discussed the upcoming Toys for Tots drive for McLean County, explaining how the program aims to support local children and families this holiday season.  The Pantagraph

CULTURE NEWS

  • Mulberry School in Normal celebrated Cultural Diversity Day today, featuring student presentations plus a video montage of diverse traditions that highlighted local cultural heritage.  The Pantagraph
  • Jennifer Jordan displayed a section of her 36 aluminum Christmas tree collection at the Jane Lynch — A Swingin’ Little Christmas show on Dec. 12 at the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts, after working with local Arts and Entertainment staff to set the stage—her four-foot trees drew extra attention.  WGLT
  • Dan Hubbard released his EP Letting Go, his first studio record in six years that explores personal themes & fresh musical sounds. He will play a full band show on Jan. 17 at the Castle Theatre in Bloomington Normal with Kayla Brown opening.  WGLT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Unit 5’s Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee is expanding support for families of older students as the district’s bilingual community grows; the volunteer group (founded at Cedar Ridge Elementary in 2010) works to close language gaps and share crucial school updates.  WGLT
  • Unit 5 approved a contract for Raptor alert badges that let faculty discreetly notify school offices and emergency management agencies of safety threats, Superintendent Kristen Weikle said; badge use will begin this school year.  The Pantagraph
  • Local high schools approved 12 IHSA amendment proposals that expand football playoffs from 32 to 48 teams, start the season a week earlier, and grow the board to 15 with seats for school leaders. The changes were certified Tuesday morning.  Cities 92.9

SPORTS NEWS

  • Illinois State defensive coordinator Travis Niekamp (father of standout Tye and Dexter) coaches his sons with tough love as they help drive the Redbirds toward a national championship run. The team advanced to the FCS semifinals and will face Villanova at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in Philadelphia.  WGLT
