COMMUNITY NEWS

  • McLean County is marking the 25th Anniversary of Toys for Tots as B104 partners to collect new, unwrapped toys for local children—aiming to donate 25,000 toys while the program has helped 130,000 kids over the years.  WJBC
  • Heartland Community College honored military veterans on November 10th with a ceremony marking the Marine Corps 250th anniversary and featured retired Major General John L. Borling—who spent 6½ years as a POW and earned a Silver Star and two Purple Hearts—as he shared his service experience and urged veterans to keep answering the call to duty.   • Rivian's board restructured CEO RJ Scaringe's pay package to offer up to $4.6 billion over the next decade if revenue and stock price targets are met — his rewards include share options, a doubled base salary, and a stake in the company's spinoff Mind Robotics. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Parkside Junior High is mourning 13-year-old Edder Diaz, who died on November 8 after being rescued from a mobile home fire—school counselors and therapy dogs are now helping students deal with the loss.   • Veterans Treatment Court helped Army veteran April Meier graduate on Nov 3 in Bloomington—Judge Randy Yedinak led the ceremony as part of a program that serves veterans charged with nonviolent crimes in five counties. The program gives veterans help with mental health and substance issues so they can rebuild their lives, showing high success rates in treatment completion.  WGLT
  • The Town of Normal will reduce a lane on Airport Road south of Shepard Road for inlet repairs starting at 7 a.m. Wednesday, November 12 and ending by 3 p.m. Friday, November 14—drivers should use caution when traveling the area.  City of Normal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Devildog Canine in Normal trains dogs to help veterans with tasks like obedience, therapy, protection and service work as co-founder Michael Parker (a veteran) prepares his new puppy to take over for his lost companion while planning a free weekly group class for veterans and first responders. Veterans such as Dennis McDonald and Ed Ruhrup benefit from the trained dogs that help ease anxiety and PTSD symptoms.  WGLT
  • Outdoor Veterans is a nonprofit that takes veterans and first responders on hikes, fishing and hunting trips to ease mental health struggles and build support— the group grew from 20 friends in 2018 to nearly 350 members in 2025. It also started a beekeeping program and plans a large annual fall fishing event— and it will add a spring event while seeking funding for a permanent meeting place.  WGLT

SPORTS NEWS

  • After Round 2 of the high school football playoffs, six teams from Central Illinois remained in contention, explained during a podcast featuring experts Jonathan Michel and Patrick Cunningham—Alex Berger also discussed big catches and college football highlights.   • The Central Illinois Veteran Warriors hockey team provided a welcoming space for disabled veterans by using sports as a form of mental health support—practicing a buddy-check system and offering help to those facing issues like PTSD and substance abuse. The team, made up of veterans from Bloomington-Normal, Peoria, and other nearby areas, showed on Sunday how hockey brings them together both on and off the ice.  WGLT
