BUSINESS NEWS

  • Rivian is cutting about 1.5% of its global workforce to boost efficiency at its Normal plant where it will start production of the new lower-cost R2 SUV next year—employees affected by the cuts will be encouraged to apply for other roles within the company.  WGLT

CRIME NEWS

  • A Bloomington man was sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to selling cocaine in McLean County — his sentence was handed down by the local court.  The Pantagraph

CULTURE NEWS

  • Normal Theater in town will host a diverse fall schedule that starts with the Psycho Ape double feature on Sept 6 featuring a filmmaker Q&A and continues with Rocky Horror Picture Show auditions on Sept 6-7 and performances in late October. Additional events include a 25th Anniversary screening of Final Destination on Sept 27, Queer for Fear Live! discussions and a live performance on Oct 15-16, a live double feature by Invincible Czars on Oct 26, and a double feature with Greg Sestero on Nov 8—presented with local partners.  City of Normal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Illinois State University set a new record this fall by enrolling 21,994 students, which is 448 more than last term. The school welcomed 4,200 freshmen — and 1,700 transfers while average grades improved and retention rose slightly as international numbers fell.  WGLT
  • Students from LeRoy High School learned safe driving tips during a rural route safety day hosted by McLean County Farm Bureau on September 4th. Local farmers and a Country Financial advisor showed the students how to safely pass large farm equipment — stressing the need to keep a proper distance and watch for blind spots.  WGLT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On August 22, Normal's mayor Chris Koos sent a letter to county board chair Elizabeth Johnston saying the county kept too much sales tax money instead of spending it as planned, and the county replied on August 27 that the town used harsh language. The disagreement over money use and a pause in sharing sales tax remains unresolved — both sides plan an audit and may bring in a mediator to help them talk.  WGLT
  • The town of Normal and Illinois State University teamed up to boost campus safety with quick-build changes at a busy intersection—where volunteers painted the ground and added outdoor seating for over 16,000 daily pedestrians. A public input session held Thursday gathered feedback, and a new project will add color on West University Street starting Sunday to improve road visibility.  Central Illinois Proud
