COMMUNITY NEWS

  • After two serious bicycle collisions this week — one fatal near Danvers on Aug. 23 and another injuring cyclists along U.S. 150 near Evans Junior High on Aug. 25 — Kellie Williams, president of the McLean County Wheelers, urged drivers and cyclists to practice patience, attentiveness and empathy on shared roads.  WGLT
  • Local radio station WJBC and the Midwest Laborers Association named Larry Mertes as Laborer of the Year for his hard work on food drives and charity projects—he will ride shotgun in a convertible at the Labor Day Parade on Sept. 1 at 10 a.m. in downtown Bloomington.  WJBC
  • Bloomington officials and the Not in Our Town group condemned hate after flyers with a swastika and false claims about the mayor were found around the city. The flyers promoted a march at Miller Park on Saturday while police investigate and a counter rally is set for noon at the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts — community leaders stress that the city will not tolerate hate.  WJBC

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A water main break closed part of West College Avenue between Sandra Lane and South Parkside Road in Normal today—crews expect repairs to restore traffic by 5 p.m.  Central Illinois Proud

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • McLean County election officials said they have maintained accurate voter rolls even as the DOJ requested Illinois’ full voter registration database by Sept. 1, and they defended the secure mail-in voting system against claims it is unsafe — stressing that established procedures ensure sensitive data is only shared when legally required. Kathy Michael and Luke Stremlau noted that strict reporting and routine purges keep the system reliable.  WGLT
