  • The Better Business Bureau of Central Illinois warns that many online gambling sites are scams—reports covering 2022 to mid-year show 200 scam alerts and over 10,000 complaints about theft and unclear terms.   • Sweet Corn Circus is returning to uptown Normal this weekend, celebrating the town's circus and farm roots—attendees will see traditional acts and local festivities.  The Pantagraph

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Two government agencies confirmed that all 12 metro areas in Illinois saw lower unemployment over the last two months—state rates fell from 5.7% to 4.8% in July as nonfarm jobs rose by about 16,500 to reach 6,185,000. In the Peoria and Bloomington areas, local unemployment also dropped to 4.7% and 4.1% respectively.  WJBC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Regional Education Office #17 superintendent Mark Jontry announced he will retire at the end of his term and backed assistant superintendent Molly Allen to lead the office when voters choose a new leader in March midterm primaries. He worked in education for over 30 years and led the office for 17 years (covering Dewitt, Livingston, Logan, and McLean counties).  WJBC
  • Illinois State University launched its new College of Engineering on Monday in Williams Hall with guest speakers including the university president and the provost—171 students registered in electrical, mechanical, and general engineering majors. The renovated Country Financial building will be ready for engineering labs by summer next year.  Central Illinois Proud

  • The City of Bloomington will host a free Inclusion and Access Compliance Symposium at Heartland Community College’s Astroth Building in Normal on Tuesday, August 26 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.—the event will feature speakers and sessions on DEI practices and policy impacts.  25 News Now
