COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bill Sulaski, a longtime community leader and booster of Illinois State University, died (85) leaving a legacy in both business and education. He served at Sulaski & Webb CPAs and led the ISU board—his celebration of life will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sept. 19 at the Bloomington Country Club.  WGLT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • District 87 held its first day of school as students returned to class and teachers welcomed them. A video captured moments of the opening event as the district began a new academic year.  The Pantagraph
  • ISU’s Office of Sustainability hosted its annual Front-Yard Freecycle event on Thursday at the First United Methodist Church parking lot—students and families grabbed free dorm and apartment items like mini fridges, dressers, and televisions to ease moving costs. Organizers said the event helped reduce waste by giving items a second life.  WGLT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Master Naturalists from the University of Illinois Extension will host Nature Trails Day at Comlara Park on Sept. 20th — community members can explore local trails and learn about regional plants and wildlife during the event.  The Pantagraph

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State lawyers filed a final reply brief to defend the Illinois gun ban that a district court ruled unconstitutional, saying the banned guns are rarely owned and not needed for self defense. Oral arguments are set for Sept 22 and the case may later move to the U.S. Supreme Court.  Cities 92.9
  • Normal will close the eastbound lane of West Beaufort Street from South University Street and will also close West Vernon Avenue from West Beaufort Street to School Street for pump station maintenance beginning 7 a.m. Tuesday, August 19 — the lane reduction is expected to finish by 12 p.m. weather permitting, and drivers are urged to use caution.  City of Normal
