- ➤ Strong Towns BloNo will show the 2023 documentary Join or Die at the Normal Theater on Thursday at 7 p.m.—the film explains how falling club membership is hurting communities. People wearing club swag get free popcorn at the screening. WGLT
- ➤ Former council member Adam Nielsen was named Normal’s 2025 Citizen of the Year on Tuesday when Mayor Chris Koos recognized his commitment to Alzheimer’s advocacy and community service. Nielsen, who served on the council for 12 years starting in 2001 and was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2023, now works on the IDPH Alzheimer’s Disease Advisory Committee (which advises on public health policy). - ➤ McLean County residents can recycle electronics by dropping them off at the Town of Normal Public Works, 1301 Warriner St., on Saturday, August 2 from 8 a.m. – Noon. They may also bring approved items on the first Saturday of each month or during weekdays from 6 a.m. – 1:30 p.m, with items containing Freon not accepted. City of Normal

- ➤ Illinois State University raised a record $45.5 million in private support during fiscal year 2025 from more than 13,500 donors, surpassing the previous record of $37.3 million set in 2019. The funds supported over 4,600 scholarships and various programs — and boosted the university’s endowment beyond $240 million. Central Illinois Proud
- ➤ Heartland Community College is partnering with CreatiVets to offer a free art course for student veterans this fall—tuition is paid by CreatiVets, a non-profit that supports veterans with art and music programs for combat stress and brain injuries. The course, titled CreatiVets Intro to Veteran Art, will give veterans a chance to expand their art skills while receiving support through this program. Central Illinois Proud

- ➤ Beginning 7:00 a.m. Thursday, July 31, South School Street between West Beaufort and West Vernon in Normal will be closed for sewer rehabilitation — eastbound lanes on West Vernon at West Beaufort will remain closed with drivers detoured to South Fell Avenue and westbound traffic limited to one lane. The road closure is expected to end by 5:00 p.m. Thursday, August 7, weather permitting. City of Normal
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The McLean County Health Department is offering back-to-school vaccine clinics to help children meet school immunization requirements with options for appointments and walk-ins. Clinics are held today at Western Avenue Community Center in Bloomington—walk-in vaccines end by 3:30 p.m.—and later appointments are available on select dates in August. WJBC
