- ➤ In Towanda, 60 to 70 teetotal women attacked the notorious Buena Vista Saloon on May 27, 1858 using hatchets and destroyed about $100 worth of liquor before 15 were tried in a crowded courtroom—sparked by the women’s demand to end the saloon's influence on local families.
