COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Town of Normal opened today the fully renovated Fairview skatepark after two years of work with community input and a $450,000 investment. Local skaters including Julia Brueckler and Judd Heald, along with Mayor Chris Koos, took part in demo sessions — engaging local youth and officials.  Central Illinois Proud

CRIME NEWS

  • Illinois police from Bloomington, Normal and other towns will join forces today for Illinois Speed Awareness Day to curb speeding — drivers can expect increased patrols. Normal Police say the campaign aims to lower traffic crashes — a move designed to reduce injuries and deaths.  Central Illinois Proud

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Heartland Community College chose alum Senesta Angell Howard to fill the trustee seat after Cecelia Long quit in June to seek work outside the district; Howard, who works as an associate director at ISU (and started a consulting firm), will join the board on August 19 and serve until 2027.  WGLT
  • Today the Seifert family of Carlock is loading live chickens, vegetables, a calf named Bailey, and Lego kits for the McLean County 4‑H Show at Cloverleaf Hall in Bloomington. The event runs until Sunday and will feature 4,500 projects from 650 young participants—showing how hard work and skill come together at a busy county fair.  WGLT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The town council approved a $3.4M program to resurface streets and adjust the FY24-25 budget (reducing revenue by $16,328,328 and expenditures by $12,925,095) on Monday. Rowe Construction was awarded contracts to begin work in August with most projects completing by June 30 and West College Avenue repairs starting in September (with funds coming from federal, state and local sources).  The Pantagraph
