CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Illinois Art Station (part of the Town of Normal Cultural Arts Department) welcomed new staff members Nicole Learned as manager, Rachel Ratliff as education coordinator, and Lauren Bachman as part-time educator to enhance its art programs. The center also began summer camp registration for June, July and early August to offer hands-on art experiences to local children and families. City of Normal
- ➤ Normal Theater will show the original Star Wars trilogy from May 2 to May 4, marking its first public screening in the 88-year-old venue (screenings begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) and will feature costume contests with prizes from Graham Crackers Comics (additional viewing times are available on Saturday and Sunday). EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Heartland Community College in Normal hosted a groundbreaking on April 24 for an expansion of the Constitution Trail around Birky Pond that will add a gazebo, pond overlook & bird watching blind and a new walking trail bordered by native prairie grasses. Construction will continue during the summer and the project, which will restore 13 acres of prairie lands and blend outdoor education with a new amphitheater classroom, is expected to finish by the end of 2025. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Illinois lawmakers pushed an initiative to preserve Underground Railroad sites—State Sen. Dave Koehler introduced a bill to create the Freedom Trails Commission that will compile over 200 historic spots from across Illinois. The commission will help develop tours and educational programs and is set to be considered in the House soon. WGLT
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Primary care doctors in Bloomington-Normal now offer mental health support with physical care—treating conditions such as anxiety, depression, and more—while working with specialists when advanced treatment is needed. WGLT
- ➤ Darla Glover, a professionally trained opera singer, volunteers about 25 hours a week at Carle BroMenn Medical Center in Normal where her singing helps ease patients' pain, anxiety, and stress, and she also donates eight hours weekly outside Carle to support healing. The Pantagraph
