COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Normal community remembered seven men killed in a twin-engine plane crash on April 7 — the Redbird 7 — when the athletic department held a public Remembrance ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday near CEFCU Arena as families and colleagues honored their legacy with acts of kindness.  The Pantagraph
  • Cities 92.9 and Expedia Cruises are hosting a contest in Normal where local residents may win a Caribbean cruise by entering at upcoming spring stops+ the first drawing will be on April 10 at Bandana’s BBQ in Bloomington, and stops on May 5, May 10, and June 10 will follow. The grand prize drawing will take place on June 26 at Smash House Tavern in Bloomington, and participants must be 21 and present to win.  Cities 92.9
  • YWCA Stepping Stones is expanding its facility at 1201 N. Hershey Road in Bloomington to double its counseling rooms and repurpose unused areas to meet rising demand for sexual assault support during Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Leaders said renovations, which began in spring 2024 and are expected to finish in May, will allow the program to serve about 20% more clients — a change driven by increased hotline calls and a jump in staff from 2 to 17.  The Pantagraph

  • A new report from the Consumer Federation of America shows that insurance premiums for Illinois homeowners increased by 50% over the past three years, making Illinois second to Utah in rate hikes+ regulators are now urged to demand more transparency from insurers.  Cities 92.9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Illinois Wesleyan University student Celina El Ghossaini (founder of the Multilingual Accessibility Club) started offering interpretation services to District 87 families in Bloomington with Gujarati being the most requested language. District 87 will partner with her volunteers (who provide services in 23 languages) during registration season to help families engage in school activities.  WGLT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Normal Fire Department announced the death of probationary firefighter Ethan Jeffreys, 23, who passed away Monday after battling a serious illness. Funeral details will be shared when available.  Central Illinois Proud
  • After several days of heavy rain, flooding in southern Illinois led the Big Muddy River to overflow near Mt. Vernon and forced Harrah’s Hotel & Casino in Metropolis to close due to Ohio River flooding; the river is not expected to crest until next week near Paducah. In Normal, the union for 650 ISU faculty will vote electronically on a tentative contract from Friday through Monday after 13 months of talks while the state wildlife department advises residents to leave young birds and animals undisturbed.  Cities 92.9

SPORTS NEWS

  • Illinois Wesleyan senior Jen Kuhn had a standout season in softball, batting .493 in 22 games and earning back-to-back first-team honors while balancing her studies in graphic design and a growing social media presence with over 33,000 TikTok followers — a record of success that marks her readiness for future sports social media opportunities. She also designed the school’s Title IX anniversary logo and won a state SkillsUSA T-shirt design competition as she prepared for internships and post-graduation pursuits.  WGLT
