COMMUNITY NEWS

  • At a hockey game in Normal last Friday, the Bloomington Bison won in overtime and raised over $2,000 for the Humane Society of Central Illinois with more than 100 dogs in attendance—local fans and pet owners cheered the fundraiser. Many adoption applications are pending and officials may schedule another Pucks and Paws game in the future.  WGLT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Charlie Moore, president & CEO of the McLean County Chamber of Commerce, was named by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to join the Committee of 100 with 15 other chamber leaders. The committee advises the Chamber's board, enhances lobbying and coalition work, and strengthens outreach to businesses.  Cities 92.9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Illinois Farm Bureau celebrated the graduation of 25 members from its Agricultural Leaders of Tomorrow program after they completed more than 80 hours of training in skills like communication and agribusiness — the class came from 15 counties and included full-time farmers, part-time farmers, and ag professionals who will now lead local efforts to support agriculture —  Cities 92.9
  • About 650 Illinois State University faculty may strike as soon as April 4 + a federal mediator will join new talks later this week.  The Pantagraph
  • Two Heartland Community College students were named to the Illinois All-Academic Team by Phi Theta Kappa—an honor that recognizes academic excellence and leadership at community colleges. Ava Doran and Carolina Joaquin Carmona now qualify for consideration for the All-USA Academic Team and a $5000 scholarship.  Cities 92.9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • McLean County residents attended a forum at the Bloomington NAACP where candidates and superintendents discussed the upcoming April 1 election and a referendum on a one-percent sales tax for school facilities. The proposed tax— which would add one cent on every dollar spent on qualifying items like prepared foods and entertainment— is expected to fund school upgrades and help offset property tax bills.  WJBC

HEALTH NEWS

  • Chestnut Health Systems will host Give Kids a Smile, a free event to provide comprehensive dental exams, cleanings and fluoride treatments for children and teens (ages 18 and under) on April 12 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Chestnut Family Dental (720 West Chestnut Street) in Bloomington; registration is required and services will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis.  Cities 92.9
